Research of Your Surrounding

This is one of my favourite work of Alexander MccQueen' s " Savage Beauty".

As he said ‘‘You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.’ And ’ People find my things sometimes aggressive. But I don’t see it as aggressive. I see it as romantic, dealing with a dark side of personality.’

This work is particularly interesting because I can see some horror elements inside. For example, the mask remains me of the plague doctor which is a physician who treated victims of the bubonic plague. In some film, it also symnolized death because in the time of epidemics, these doctors rarely cured their patients. McQueen also said that this work is inspired by Victorian Gothic, which combines elements of horror and romance. Furthermore, as the feather he used is black, that remains me of Raven which refers to the title “Savage” there is no unnecessary details or decorations on the body and the big shoulder parts implies the wing so from a distance, it looks more like a huge bird. McQueen’s work has too much to learn from, but what I could use now, is the idea of paradoxical relationship such as life and death, lightness and darkness, melancholy and beauty.

Research of Wear It

This research of Wear It is not of any particular artist but from a book called

Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures & Spectacular Saints from the Catacombs

It makes thinks another side of function of the jewellery, which is decorate death. I believe that for the majority of people fear death and I do, too. However, in this book, jewelleries decorated the dead bodies somehow gives me a peaceful feeling and made the body beautiful at the same time reduces the fear for death. Looking at them, they changed my attitude of death, now I feel very respectful visually pleased when I look at these bodies. Furthermore, these decorations also shows the social standards and identity of the master which could also be considered as its function.

This book could be a reference in a board area, for example, the structure of jewelleries could be used in architecture  and the pattern could be take into graphic design.

Magali Ducornet

She is a graphic design but also works as fashion illustrator, I like her work because the design is very clean and tidy. I can clearly see the texture of the garment, I did the researches of her because I really interested at her career she travelled around the world, she also validate a preparatory class in Applied Arts in 2013 and just graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from Troy University in May 2018 with a 3.87 GPA. She worked also for the Troy University’s International Marketing Team where I was in charge of the business relationship between France and the university, but also as a graphic designer. That is the working model I really admire.

Exhibition, Is Fashion Modern, The Museum of Modern Art

The title “Is fashion Modern” really interested me as it is a rhetorical question I also asked myself, is fashion modern? In my opinion, the answer is yes but also no. That is because fashion, for me, is like a cycle, what is popular right now is not popular ten years ago but what is popular 100 years or 1000years ago became the vintage and Lolita fashions right now.

However, the revive of old fashions also contains new things, for example, the technology is changed for making clothes, maybe the outlook is very similar nut the sewing and knitting techniques would be different. So that gives the designer ability put their own ideas in but can still remain some old tastes.

I think the idea of referencing the classic work but alter it in into my own techniques and put my ideas in would very important and useful for me to do.

Research of revelation of erasure

Screen Shot 2019-10-15 at 12.08.59 PM.png

“Erasure is never merely a matter of making things disappear: there is always some
detritus strewn about in the aftermath, some bruising to the surface from which word
or image has been removed, some reminder of the violence done to make the world
look new again” by Brian Dillon, The Revelation of Erasure.

After today's lesson, I did some research about the exhibition called Revelation of Erasure in Tate modern, and I found it really interesting as the Artist actually added things on in order to hide them and they removed things form the picture but gave the audience more space to imagine. This painting called True colours by Boo Saville, 2018. That work showed her interests in exploring colors and she applied up to forty layers of paint to achieve this extraordinary effect, erasing any suggestion of her own mark-making in spite of the emotional tenor of the works. She also said :"The black and white paintings are purely about the surface of momentary thought and the colour fields are about the depth and vault of emotion and memory layered on top of each other." I would like to use the same idea which is using colours to show the emotion into my future works.

Reflection on the research of Chihuly Glass works

There was mass advertise all around the tube of Chihuly Night in the royal botanic garden. So I went there to do some research before the architectural  workshop. The most impressive thing is the artist 's idea of combining the nature and his artworks. Also, his choice of colour fits perfectly with the location. For example, the lotus lake, the white glass formed a strong contract with black lake and made the whole glass room his own art work. Some of them also hide inside the plants and the best way to see them is to go above and see from a height.Chihuly also clearly set the angle for us to look at these sculpture, for example, you can only look it down or look it up, and that is the best view point the artist thought. I would like to try including the environment into my art work and the glass would be a interesting material for me to use in the furtrue.

Research of Language and Interaction

(Artist Lagos, Nigeria) Video Beggar women in Mexico, link above

That makes me thought about humanity and social behavior, the picture also shows the audiences reaction, for example, the child on the right hand side looks shocking and nobody stand up and stop this action which shows the lack of kindness in these people. For me, this photo looks more like a social experiment because that made me thought about “People are not kind or justice when they born but thought to be so”. Further, I think putting some audience into the art work could give us more thought and I would like to experiment this in my future works.

Research of Lost letter

Malika Favre is a French illustrator and graphic artist based in London. Her style of works could be characterized by pure minimalism within Pop art and Op art, where it sometimes described as 'Pop Art meets Op Art'. She is the artist I’m very interested at. Her work, “Astronautes” shows three different female figures, uses simple lines, gradient change of colour shows the identity of these Astronaute. As an audience, I really enjoy the feeling of looking at her work, because the composition of her work is very balanced and she also choice to put the right amount of details in, not too much or too little. The fact her work has no visible outline make the look neat and tidy and the contrast between colours also brings the highlight of her works. I would like to try to avoid using outline in my future works.

Mark Rothko “Light Red Over Black”--Extension project

T00275_10.jpg.1

Mark Rothko “Light Red Over Black”

“Light Red Over Black is a large oil painting on a rectangular, vertically oriented canvas. As is suggested by the work’s title, the painting consists of two large black rectangles enclosed by a thick, vivid scarlet border, recalling the structure of a window. The unmodulated paint of the scarlet section contrasts with the blurred rectangles it surrounds. These areas of black paint have been sparsely applied and blended with blue pigment, creating pulsating, hazy forms that give the canvas a sense of movement and depth.” (Tate website)

In the one day workshop, we only explored using print, and skills are pretty limited because the quality of cutting would determine the final outcome, so in the extension work I would like to use painting, like the artist Mark Rothko who was a pioneer of colour field painting and abstract expressionism. So I would like to experiment oil painting and apply multiple layers on it.

Extension project research, Alice In Wonderland by Disney , 1945

Link of the original resource https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enr80S5pTBU

After Monday’s lesson, I reconsidered what I I’m going to do because the teacher gave us some question that made me change my idea “What is the aim of this project?” and “What do you what to achieve?” That brings me back to the day we did our lost letter workshop when I saw other student’s work. I thought they are amazing, and I would like to refine my piece to make it more interesting. Therefore, I decided to return to my initial ideas which is inspired by the novel Alice in Wonderland and work with it. So I choose this Disney film to be my reference and I will take more letters into this work but still only use red, black and white.

John Tenniel, illustrator of Alice in Wonderland, Extension Project researche

After I decided to refine the Alice in wonderland idea, I did more research of what kind of drawing styles I could have done. Whether should it be delicate lines or simple lines? Looking at John Tenniel’s work, I feel the line and shape could be rich but not as complex as his. Furthermore, it is important for me to consider how to hide letters into the picture, clever use could increase the peculiar feeling of wonderland.

Extension project research- Malika Favre, hide and seek

Screen Shot 2019-10-15 at 3.21.22 PM.pngAfter I did the six storyboards, I want to try to make the picture move, like Malika Favre’s work, Hide and Seek. I think the way she planned actions are very interesting, I was surprised how her picture can be turn to a totally different work and how suddenly a figure appears and disappears. However, I don’t think right now I have enough knowledge and skills to support me finish such a advance work but I quite like the idea that things all disappears in the end and become totally blank or black, that is also what I want to experiment later on.
